Dental ServicesHorses have teeth with long roots call hypsodont teeth. These teeth continuously erupt from the jaw as a horse ages. These teeth are used to grind food for easier digestion. This grinding motion gradually wears down the exposed crown surface of the tooth. The teeth are constantly erupting and the crown is constantly worn by grinding food, over time resulting in uneven wear. Uneven wear of the teeth creates hooks and points on the tooth surfaces which can be painful to the horse. Signs that your horse may be developing hooks and points or some other dental issue include dropping food, balling up hay (quidding), resisting the bit, chewing with his/her head turned to either side, or overall weight loss.

At Burdick Equine we use a specialized power float system to correct uneven wear in the mouth and improve the bit seat for better bridle comfort. We also perform wolf tooth extractions. Dr. Burdick performs more complex extractions such as molar extractions in the event of tooth abscess or fracture.
